Congratulations to the incredible winner of the 2023 Geneskool Volunteer Service Award, Sally Ou! The Geneskool Volunteer Service Award is given annually during National Volunteer Week (find out more about the week here).
Sally Ou
Sally has been volunteering with Genome BC since 2019, and has accumulated a heroic number of hours in her years with the program!
Sally started volunteering with Geneskool back when she was studying forest science and genetics with UBC Forestry. Since graduating in 2017, Sally has been active in science outreach and in the healthcare community. She currently works on the front lines as a Patient Ambassador at Burnaby General Hospital.
Sally credits her time with Geneskool as a stepping stone for her success in communicating with both patients and students. In her essay she wrote, “one of the most rewarding experiences that has kept me volunteering with Geneskool is being able to be a role model to help cultivate confidence in young girls to begin their STEM journey.” Through her time with Genome BC, Sally has not only become an excellent role model for other young people interested in STEAM, but also grown to become an incredible educator.
A huge thank you to Sally from all of us at Genome BC!
