An objective of Genome Canada is to ‘ensure leadership in ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social issues (GE³LS) related to genomics and proteomics research.’  These projects will help understand how Canadians make decisions in the face of conflicting information about genomic technologies. Genomics research, for all of its wonders, also brings concerns and the public must be involved in discussions about the ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social issues surrounding the research. Canadians must understand the relative risks and benefits. The objective of these projects is to develop a defensible framework for consultation between genomic researchers and the public, bringing together three research streams – consultation, deliberation and computer-based modeling – to identify concerns and test alternative approaches. These studies have developed an approach, with matching technology, that allows policy makers, other stakeholders, and the public to enter into better communication.
