Genomic Innovations: Energy and Environmental Solutions

Genome Alberta, with support from the Government of Alberta, is investing $1.5 million in new research collaborations to scale the uptake of genomic innovations in the energy sector for improved environmental outcomes. The Genomic Innovations: Energy and Environmental Solutions initiative will fund omics-based research projects that aim to accelerate the development of products, processes, or applications with clear potential for implementation within the energy sector. Applications can address areas like:

  • Bioremediation and reclamation of contaminated sites
  • GHG emission reduction via microbial processes or bio-based carbon capture
  • Biodiversity assessment and ecological monitoring using eDNA tools
  • Clean technology development (e.g. hydrogen production, carbon storage)
  • Optimization of processes that limit environmental risk (e.g. corrosion prevention, water treatment)

which were identified by Alberta’s energy community in a virtual stakeholder engagement session held by Genome Alberta (link to report).

Genome BC will support interprovincial projects that strengthen collaboration between Alberta and British Columbia, with a focus on applying omics-enabled technologies and synthetic biology to reduce environmental impacts and advance sustainable practices in the energy sector and other extractive industries such as mining, oil, and gas.

ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for a matching cash contribution from Genome BC, projects must:

  1. Be led by a researcher based in Alberta, and
  2. include a BC-based co-lead or co-applicant.
  3. For projects involving BC researchers, Genome BC will commit to co-funding up to 33.33% of the project budget spent in BC at eligible BC institutions, provided that industry contributes at least 16.67% of the total project budget.

INFORMATION SESSION
To learn more, please register for the information session, scheduled for Monday, June 23, at 8:00 PDT / 9:00 MDT. A recording will also be made available.

For more information, please visit Genome Alberta’s program information page.

CONTACT
Projects with co-leads or co-applicants in BC should contact Michelle Chan, Research and Innovation Manager, at EnergyEnvironment@genomebc.ca in advance of the submission deadlines to ensure project alignment with Genome BC’s sector priorities.
