Kamloops, BC – Genome British Columbia is taking our community engagement program, “Bringing Genomics Home” on the road to Kamloops. Community members are welcome to join Drs. Martin Dawes and Brad Popovich for a lively and engaging presentation: “Doc, while I’m here can you take a look at my genome?” This important discussion about the opportunities, applications and potential impacts of personalized medicine will be fueled by questions from the audience.
Dr. Martin Dawes is a practicing physician and the Head of Department of Family Practice at UBC. Along with his research focused on chronic disease management, blood pressure and diabetes, he also works with primary care providers and Health Authorities across the province to ensure the programs of education and research with the Department are aligned to the health care needs of the population of British Columbia.
Dr. Brad Popovich is the Chief Scientific Officer for Genome BC. He was one of the first genetic counselors to immigrate to Canada from the US. He has significant experience in human genetics and in the late 1980’s helped pioneer in the forensic use of DNA and his lab in San Diego was the first in the US to offer solely DNA-based paternity testing.
“We are delighted that Martin and Brad are able to team up and bring their significant insight and knowledge to the people of Kamloops”, says Dr. Alan Winter, President & CEO of Genome BC. “Personalized medicine is changing the way we monitor and treat disease. This exciting area of medicine is still in early stages but we are moving way from a one-size-fits-all approach to more patient-tailored treatments. We look forward to meeting community members who are interested in learning more about the science behind our health.”
