Like whisky (smoky, fruity) or wine (bright, earthy), cannabis has a wide range of aromas.
A new Genome BC-funded project, in partnership with Aurora Cannabis Inc. and researchers from the University of British Columbia (UBC), is sniffing out the most scintillating cannabis smells.
Drs. Joerg Bohlmann from UBC and Jose Celedon of Aurora are working together to characterize the genetic and biochemical basis of aromas in cannabis and establish molecular markers that will be used to develop varieties with high-quality aromas, which is a trait that drives consumer preferences.
Since the legalization of cannabis for recreational use in 2018, Canada has become an international leader in cannabis research and its utility as a high-value crop.
