The life sciences sector in British Columbia (BC) is thriving, driven by a potent combination of world class research, entrepreneurial spirit and collaboration. Partnerships are the cornerstone of this success, fostering innovation, accelerating research translation and ultimately delivering real benefits for British Columbians and beyond.
“Science is about working together. The best solutions come when people from different backgrounds and with different perspectives come together.”
— Dr. Jennifer Doudna*
Genomics stands at the forefront of these advancements and is reshaping industries and societies. Backed by strategic investments, talent and partnerships, genomic research is tackling some of our most significant challenges — from human health to climate change. BC is a world leader in genomics, with innovative life sciences companies providing real solutions, societal benefits and sustainable economic growth.
The Power of Collaboration: From Research to Impact
Scientific innovation is not a solitary pursuit. Breakthroughs often emerge from the confluence of expertise, resources and perspectives.
Partnerships have been fundamental to Genome BC’s success since our inception. We have united ecosystem partners around shared priorities, fostering collaboration between researchers, industry leaders, policymakers and Indigenous communities. Our investments have made an indelible impact in areas such as pandemic response, better cancer outcomes, improved environmental sustainability and the security of a safe food supply.
Precision medicine delivers tailored treatments based on an individual patient’s genetic makeup. Innovative agricultural practices are improving crop yields while minimizing environmental impact. These advancements are made possible through strategic partnerships that combine scientific expertise with industry knowledge and public sector support.
Building a Diverse and Inclusive Ecosystem
By bringing together diverse expertise, resources and investment, we are accelerating innovation while ensuring its equitable application for all British Columbians. A truly innovative ecosystem thrives on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). In addition to our standing commitments to EDI, Genome BC is committed to fostering a culture that embraces Indigenous perspectives and ensures that the benefits of genomics research reach all communities. Partnerships with Indigenous groups are crucial in this endeavour and that’s why we seek opportunities to support both new and ongoing collaborations, such as an initiative between the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Simon University and the University of British Columbia, which marries traditional knowledge, archaeology and genomics to understand historical variations in salmon populations.
Our Continued Commitment to Collaboration
The future of BC’s life sciences sector continues to be bright. By fostering a collaborative environment that encourages innovation and translates research into impactful solutions, we are building a strong foundation for economic growth and societal well being.
As we move forward, Genome BC remains committed to being a catalyst for collaboration. We are grateful for the partnerships we have already forged and are excited to build new ones. Together, we can harness the power of genomics to create a healthier, more sustainable future for all British Columbians.
* Dr. Jennifer Doudna has emphasized the importance of collaboration in her work on CRISPR-Cas9. This sentiment is reflected in various interviews and her book, “A Crack in Creation: Gene Editing and the Unthinkable Power to Control Evolution” (2017).
