The Metabolomics Innovation Centre (TMIC) is Canada’s national metabolomics core facility and technology development Centre. It provides researchers with world-class resources for metabolomics research, including testing facilities, specialized experimental methods, bioinformatics tools and scientific expertise. Co-located at the University of Alberta and the University of Victoria, TMIC supports cutting-edge technology development and biomarker research programs with numerous local, national and international partners. Over the past 4 years with funding through Genome Canada’s STICs program and current support as a member of the GIN network, TMIC has generated 2 large chemical libraries, developed more than 20 new metabolomics assays and created or upgraded another 15 widely used metabolomics databases and web servers. Over the next 2 years, with additional support through a Technology Development fund, TMIC will focus its future efforts towards 4 major objectives: 1) Develop new core capabilities and methods to expand TMIC’s service offerings; 2) Develop integrative multi-omics bioinformatics tools to support large scale systems biology research projects; 3) “Democratize” metabolomics by developing novel technologies and kits that make metabolomics assays less expensive and easier to implement both internally and externally, and 4) Develop resources and tools to support novel compound identification and quantification.
