Despite the significant advances made in health research, technology and clinical practice, one of the most problematic challenges continues to be the safety and effectiveness of medication. The debilitating and lethal consequences of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are a striking failure and a major unmet problem of modern medicine. The ineffectiveness of a drug to achieve its desired outcome is the most common ADR and along with other ADRs (such as side effects) ranks as the fourth leading cause of death in North America. Pharmacogenetic testing can help identify whether these responses are influenced by genetic factors.
This project led by Dr. Bruce Carleton of UBC in collaboration with Bob Mehr of Pure Integrative Pharmacy aims to establish a robust mechanism to introduce pharmacogenetic tests into the health system. This is anticipated to improve the prevention of ADRs, reduce drug-induced harm and optimize drug effectiveness. These tests will be affordable, non-invasive and easily accessible. They will be purchased off-the-shelf in Pure Integrative pharmacies. Test kits will be updated using artificial intelligence to maintain the relevance of the testing program. Training resources for pharmacists will ensure that those who complete the course are equipped to meaningfully interpret patient pharmacogenetic information and support more optimal prescription drug use.
