Since its establishment in 2018, Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Applied Genomics Centre (AGC) has emerged as a leader in applying advanced genomic tools to support the agriculture industry in British Columbia and across Canada. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies, the AGC has helped address critical challenges in crop production, animal health and overall agricultural sustainability.
The Applied Genomics Centre (AGC) has been designated a Technology Access Centre (TAC). TACs are specialized research and innovation hubs, typically linked to Canadian colleges, that provide access to advanced equipment, facilities and expert teams for applied research, prototyping and technical problem-solving. This new hub will serve as a unique platform for agricultural genomics innovation, offering specialized research and development (R&D) services tailored to the needs of local and regional businesses. Its goal is to help industries thrive by providing practical, science-based solutions that improve productivity and resilience.
Genomic technologies are transforming agriculture worldwide by delivering sustainable solutions to improve crop yields, livestock health and resource efficiency. However, many farmers and agri-businesses in BC and Canada face barriers in accessing these advanced technologies and the expertise required to use them effectively. The AGC-TAC, supported by Genome BC, will bridge this gap by making genomics more accessible and affordable, strengthening the industry’s sustainability and competitiveness.
Beyond technology access, the AGC-TAC will enhance KPU’s applied research ecosystem by building on a strong foundation of community collaborations. It will complement existing agriculture research initiatives and foster new partnerships across academia, industry and government. This strategic expansion positions KPU as a growing leader in practical, innovative solutions for agriculture and will ensure that BC and Canada remain at the forefront of sustainable food production.
