Dr. Ben Koop is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Victoria, where he has advanced the fields of genomics, molecular evolution and genetic variation for over three decades. His research explores how these forces shape immunity, biodiversity and responses to environmental pressures, particularly in aquatic systems.
Dr. Koop has led major national and international research initiatives, including programs funded by Genome Canada, Genome BC, CIHR and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. He is especially recognized for his contributions to salmon genomics, which have helped improve the understanding of health and disease in both wild and farmed populations.
He has held leadership roles as Department Chair and Director of the Centre for Biomedical Research. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed papers, delivered more than 250 presentations globally and served on multiple editorial boards. His honours include the EWR Steacie Memorial Fellowship, Canada Research Chair, Genome BC Award for Scientific Excellence and the DFO Distinction Award.
Dr. Koop is also a member of the RCMP’s National DNA Data Bank Advisory Committee, reflecting his long-standing commitment to applying genomics for public benefit.
