The Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP) is Genome Canada’s flagship commercialization program supporting industry driven R&D in genomics and biotechnology. It funds collaborations between a Canadian for-profit company (the receptor) and an academic research partner to translate biotechnology innovations into market ready products, processes, or technologies.
GAPP is sector agnostic, supporting companies that develop genomics enabled technologies or can benefit from genomics insights in areas such as health, agriculture and agrifood, forestry, biomanufacturing, fisheries and aquaculture, environment, and mining.
There are two streams in GAPP, and BC applicants need to apply through Genome BC for both streams:
- The National GAPP stream provides up to $2M from Genome Canada and up to $1M from Genome BC, covering up to half of total project costs, with the remainder coming from the industry partner (cash and/or in-kind, minimal 1/3 of total budget) and other cofunders. Projects typically range from $900K–$6M in total value and focus on well defined commercial opportunities where genomics can clearly de-risk development, accelerate commercialization, or create competitive advantage.
- The Regional GAPP stream (BC-GAPP)supports mid-sized projects (typically 300K to over 1M) at slightly earlier stages, especially those with strong potential to scale into the National Stream or other funding opportunities.
By fostering partnerships between industry and researchers, GAPP:
- Leverages academic expertise to accelerate product and technology development.
- De-risks opportunities to attract follow-on funding
- Increases private-sector investment in genomics-based innovation
- Advances or validates IP using cutting-edge genomics tools, with dedicated funding available for IP protection for small businesses (1–49 employees).
Letters of Intent are due April 13, 2026. For more information about GAPP, please visit our website or contact us at GAPP@genomebc.ca.
