Every day we are seeing new and innovative ways being created and tested to help with the tracking, treatment and vaccination against COVID-19. One such innovation is the development of a faster testing tool that would allow for faster diagnosis, cutting the current time of 2 hours down to 30 minutes.
The new test kit has been developed as a collaborative project between the University of Oxford, and the Oscar Suzhou Centre for Advance Research. Not only is this tool faster, but it also requires less specialist equipment which would mean it has the potential to be used in a variety of new settings, such as airports and community health centres.
This new method is able to detect RNA from the novel coronavirus earlier than the current available test, and so far, has shown a 100% success rate in trials in a small initial study. The team hope this new testing kit will be available for use within a very short time span and believe this advance in testing will better enable people to help ‘flatten the curve’.
