The genes that help keep bees clean could be the answer to disease-resistant honeybee colonies. Some worker bees detect and remove any sick or dead larvae from their colonies, which in turn improves the colony’s chance of survival. If colonies can be bred to express highly hygienic behaviours there is potential that these colonies will be healthier, more resistant to disease and death, and better able to pollinate crops, and produce honey.
