“People are naturally curious, but complex topics such as genomics and the jargon used in the research can be an impediment to them finding out more. I believe it is essential to create exciting and engaging content that is accessible and relatable to the general public in order to share the wonders of this field of research”

Phoebe Melvin
Communications and Outreach Specialist
  • 604.675.1021

Phoebe works with the communications team to make science and genomics interesting and engaging to the general public, particularly across our social media channels and public events. Creating thought provoking content is central to her role, sharing the amazing variety of topics within the field of genomics, and the incredible diversity of the work funded by Genome BC.

Phoebe has honed her skills as a science communicator internationally in the tertiary education and museum sectors. Beginning her career delivering science workshops to over 80,000 Australian students, Phoebe subsequently managed the education team at the prestigious Natural History Museum of London in the United Kingdom prior to joining the team at Genome BC. These experiences highlighted for her the need to make science fun, relatable and inspiring.

Phoebe has a background in laboratory science, earning her first-class Honours in Biological Science through Deakin University prior to achieving her Masters in Science Communication (Outreach) through the Australian National University. Phoebe’s favourite memory of her time at the Australian National University remains setting herself on fire across Australia in the name of science engagement.
