There are 391,000 known species of plants on Earth, and relatively little is known about their evolutionary history and diversity. Researchers from the Herbarium of China National GeneBank have sequenced the genomes of 689 of their 1,2000 vascular plant species from the Botanical Garden in Ruili, China, which effectively triples the number of plant species with available genome data. This ‘digital botanical garden’, comprised of new genetic data, together with images and voucher specimens, will be available to other researchers, and will be invaluable to other research, such as the evolution of specific plant genes.
