The motion of organs due to respiration and cardiac contraction is a major concern during both medical imaging and radiation treatment. The commercially available respiratory and cardiac contraction monitoring systems are either invasive or do not offer cardiac gating solution. The aim of this project is to develop a simultaneously respiratory and cardiac gating system using a single device based on electrical impedance technology. With a prototype being already constructed, the next step will be to build a full-fledged working unit, improve its reliability to suit testing on human subjects before it can be applied. Moreover, the developed unit is to be integrated with the Varian Linac system. Such electrical impedance detection method is expected to contribute to more accurate gating for radiotherapy in the future.
