Vancouver, BC – Dr. Alan Winter has been honoured as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). This internationally prestigious honour recognizes Dr. Winter’s distinguished contribution to the development of satellite-aided search and rescue systems and to the administration of a wide range of science and technology organizations. The recognition is being bestowed to him at the AAAS 2014 Annual Meeting in Chicago.
“I am pleased and humbled to receive this honour,” said Dr. Winter, President and CEO of Genome British Columbia. “Recognition from my peers and an organization of this stature is very meaningful. I am grateful for the opportunity to recognize the important role science plays in our economy and society today. The advancements made over the period of my career have been truly remarkable. I have been fortunate to be involved in the technology business in our Province for many years and I truly believe that this is the most exciting time to be engaged in science and technology in our history. ”
Alan Winter is President and CEO of Genome British Columbia, appointed in December 2001. Genome BC is a not-for-profit research organization established in Vancouver to enable British Columbia to become a world leader in selected areas of genomics R&D and to develop a vibrant life sciences cluster in the province. Dr. Winter is also a Trustee of the Providence Health Care Research Institute, a Director of Alberta Innovates, and Chair of the BC CDC Foundation for Population and Public Health. In 2007, he received a Leadership Award from LifeSciences BC.
Dr. Winter has deep experience at senior levels in the technology industry and in government, including: the founding President and CEO of the New Media Innovation Centre in Vancouver; President of the ComDev Space Group in Ontario; and President and CEO of MPR Teltech in Vancouver. During his tenure as President at MPR, six companies were spun out including PMC-Sierra and Sierra Wireless. Prior to MPR, Dr. Winter worked for Telesat Canada and the federal Communications Research Centre in Ottawa.
Dr. Winter is one of only six Canadians, out of 338 fellows, inducted this year. Past inductees from British Columbia include Dr. Julian Davies and Dr. James Hogg.
AAAS is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science for the benefit of all people. AAAS also publishes Science magazine, a pivotal publication for scientists. The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874. This year’s AAAS Fellows were formally announced in the News & Notes section of Science on November 29th, 2013.
