Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP)

The Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP) funds downstream research and development (R&D) projects that address real world opportunities and challenges identified by industry, government, not-for-profits and other “Receptors” of genomics knowledge and technologies. GAPP projects are collaborations between academic researchers and Receptor organizations and are funded by Genome Canada and co-funded by Receptors and other stakeholders.

To be eligible for GAPP funding, projects must:

develop and apply a genomics-derived tool, product or process to an opportunity or need defined by the Receptor(s);
focus on late stage R&D that will position the innovation for implementation / commercialization;
be co-led by an Academic and a Receptor organization in partnership, with active and necessary roles for both (see GAPP Investment Strategy and Guidelines for GAPP project partner definitions); and,
have the potential to generate significant social and/or economic benefits for Canada.

All four of the above points must be demonstrated to be eligible for funding through GAPP. The program is designed to develop solutions in the near term (i.e., within three to five years after project completion).

Applicants can request up to 1/3 of the project budget from Genome Canada, from a minimum contribution of $100,000 to a maximum of $2 million. The remaining project funding must be secured from other eligible sources, with at least 1/3 provided by the Receptor(s). The duration of GAPP projects should be a minimum of one year to a maximum of three years but may be shorter or longer if justified.

Project Term

1-3 years

All applications to GAPP led by an academic researcher based in British Columbia must be submitted through Genome BC.

Interested applicants should first contact Genome BC for advice to determine if a project concept is suitable for GAPP or other programs.

If eligible for GAPP, Genome BC works with applicants to define goals, articulate user benefits and prepare applications. Genome BC has established a process to work with teams to increase competitiveness at each stage of Genome Canada’s application process and provides support every step of the way.
