SUMMARY:Genome BC's Data Literacy Series - Accelerating Europe's Response to Biodiversity Threats: The European Reference Genome Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Some scientists consider the biodiversity crisis to be a greater threat than climate change. Over 37\,000 species worldwide (28% of all species) are at risk of extinction. \nA reference genome is a digital nucleic acid sequence database assembled by scientists as a representative example of the set of genes in one idealized individual organism of a species. Reference genomes provide the most complete insight into the genetic basis that forms each species and represent a powerful resource in understanding how biodiversity functions. With approximately one-fifth of the ~200\,000 European species at risk of extinction\, European scientists decided to act fast and together to generate high-quality complete genome resources on a large scale. \nWhat you’ll learn in this session: \n\nWhat the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) is\nERGA’s impact on the scientific community and beyond\nExamples of recent genomes completed and how they will improve knowledge and applications\nFuture plans: scaling up genome production for the European biodiversity

SUMMARY:Genome BC's Data Literacy Series - WHO Guiding Principles for Pathogen Genome Data Sharing
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THIS EVENT\nAccording to the World Health Organization (WHO)\, the capacity for pathogen genomics around the world is advancing rapidly. And while advances are welcome\, there are inequities in access to new technologies in global surveillance that put us all at risk. \nJoin us for the next session in our ongoing Data Literacy Series as Dr. Vasee Moorthy presents the WHO Guiding Principles for Pathogen Genome Data Sharing. These principles chart a path for timely sharing of pathogen genome data\, while acknowledging the legitimate concerns and needs of scientists around the world that are the originators of this data. \nAs the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic and begins to build a stronger global architecture for health emergency preparedness and response\, these guiding principles are a much-needed tool for constructing a more equitable and transparent global system that keeps us all safer. \nWhat you’ll learn in this session: \n\nWhat the WHO Guiding principles for pathogen genome data sharing are\nWhy real-time pathogen data sharing is crucial and what was learned in the COVID-19 pandemic\nHow inequities in access to new technologies for pathogen genomics can lead to blind spots in global surveillance that put us all at risk\nWhy global standards for sharing pathogen genomic data are necessary\n\nABOUT THIS SERIES \nGenome BC is thrilled to present our ongoing series on Data Literacy. This series aims to bring national and international experts together to help deepen our understanding of different data related initiatives\, standards and resources. \nDeveloping a better shared understanding of benefits and risks related to data will help advance data collection\, sharing and use in sectors such as health\, agrifood and natural resources. For example\, much of the datasets resulting from Genome BC funded projects have value and utility beyond the purpose for which they are originally generated. SUMMARY:Genome BC's 2021 Annual Genomics Forum: COVID-19 - A Moment of Importance for Genomics
DESCRIPTION:Genomics has played an important role in the battle against COVID-19. Scientists around the world have brought forward a herculean effort to manage the outbreak and bring an end to the pandemic. Early sequencing of the virus and data sharing has led to improved surveillance\, tracking transmission of the virus and its variants\, in real-time. New vaccines employ an mRNA sequence\, a technology years in the making. The past year has also given rise to many challenges including an increasing amount of misinformation and mistrust in science.

SUMMARY:Don Rix Distinguished Keynote Address 2019: "We are not alone: The Human Microbiome in Health and Disease"
DESCRIPTION:Inside and out\, our bodies host trillions of microscopic organisms comprised of bacteria\, archaea\, fungi\, and viruses. This is the human microbiota and your microbiome is all the genes your microbiota contains. We share a symbiotic relationship with these organisms and they play an important role in our health and disease. \nA pioneer and global leader in genomic medicine\, Dr. Claire M. Fraser is one of the most highly cited investigators in microbiology. In 1995\, Dr. Fraser was the first to map the complete genetic code of a free-living organism — Haemophilus influenza — the bacterium that causes lower respiratory tract infections and meningitis in infants and young children. She helped launch the new field of microbial genomics and revolutionized the way microbiology has been studied. She and her team also sequenced the bacteria behind syphilis and Lyme disease\, as well as the first plant genome and the first human-pathogenic parasite. Her work also helped identify the source of a deadly 2001 anthrax attack in one of the biggest investigations conducted by U.S. law enforcement. \nGenome BC was pleased to present Claire M. Fraser as the 2019 Don Rix Distinguished Keynote speaker. Join us as she discusses the structure and function of the human microbiome and the role it plays in health and disease. \nAn engaging Q&A session with the audience will follow the talk. This event is free of charge; however\, seating is limited and will reach capacity. Early registration is recommended. Genome BC is proud to organize science forums at no cost\, but we depend on your attendance. Please be sure you can attend before registering or contact us at info@genomebc.ca immediately should you need to cancel. \nFollow the Twitter conversation at #DRDK2019 \nThursday\, October 24th\, 2019\n4:00-4:30pm Registration\n4:30-6:00pm Keynote Address and Q&A\n6:00 – 7:00pm Reception \n

SUMMARY:CPTP Webinar: One billion pieces of data and growing: Canada’s Living Population Laboratory Overview\, Case Studies & Access Guide
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will provide an overview of the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project (CPTP) —Canada’s largest population study of more than 320\,000 Canadians in six regional cohorts across the country — that allows researchers to explore how genetics\, environment\, lifestyle and behaviour interact and contribute to the development of cancer and other chronic diseases. \n  \nThe CPTP is a population study that maintains harmonized and de-identified self-reported data\, physical and biochemical measures\, and includes genomic profiles from participants who have consented to linkage to provincial and national administrative health databases. This allows researchers to tackle challenging questions at a lower cost\, in less time and with more certain conclusions. \n  \nResearchers are already integrating CPTP data into their own studies\, generating valuable insights that may enable earlier detection\, monitoring\, and inform future interventions. Two case studies will explore how CPTP participant data is linked with cancer data to better understand disease risk\, and another that linked participant and environment data to study gene-by-environment interactions. \n  \nClick here to register and learn more about CPTP’s capability to leverage massive datasets for population health research and how to access this data through the CPTP Portal. \n  \nDr. Philip Awadalla joined CPTP as Principal Investigator in 2009\, initially as the Director of the CARTaGENE study in Quebec until March of 2015 and then as the Director the Ontario Health Study in July 2015. He was named National Scientific Director of CPTP in March 2018. Dr. Awadalla is a Director of Computational Biology at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR)\, and is the Director of Genome Canada’s Canadian Data Integration Centre. He is also a Professor of Population and Medical Genomics at the University of Toronto. \n  \nWebinar registration: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_AyQ3fV2BRBGh_1JF3SGglQ

SUMMARY:17th Annual Genomics Forum "Cannabis: Cultivating Knowledge\, Growing Innovation"
DESCRIPTION:Canada’s legalization of cannabis has heightened the need to understand more about the properties and applications of cannabinoids spurring an expanded interest in cannabis research and development. After decades of prohibition\, there is still much to learn about cannabis compared to other botanicals. Legalization introduces a whole new spectrum of cannabis opportunities beyond medical applications creating an urgent need for research to address gaps in knowledge on the effects and safety of cannabis as a whole — important areas of research that will help drive cannabis regulation.Genomics can aid in the area of cannabis research for enhanced production efficiency\, the creation of precision-designed varieties of cannabis capable of producing specific benefits\, and help understand individual variability in cannabis response. The Forum will also help explore the unique opportunity BC and Canada have to lead the world around research and application of genomic technologies in the Cannabis industry.Genome BC is pleased to invite you to attend our 17th Annual Genomics Forum “Cannabis: Cultivating Knowledge\, Growing Innovation.” Discussion at this year’s forum will examine topical issues surrounding cannabis under four unique areas:\n\nHuman Health: Genomics & Response to Cannabis\nCannabis Plant Genomics & Agrifood Sector\nRegulatory\, Legal\, & Ethical Aspects of Cannabis \nCommercial Opportunities\n\nJoin us.
