SUMMARY:Indigenous engagement: Teaching and learning together webinar
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever been interested in collaborating with Indigenous communities but been unsure of how to take the first steps\, let alone sustain a whole project together? In this webinar\, we will share a methodology that has been co-developed over several years between members of the Stó:lō community and colleagues at the University of the Fraser Valley\, industry partners\, and funders\, like Genome BC. \nThe methodology (í:westel qe tótel:exwtel – Teaching Each Other and Learning Together) involves many small\, but meaningful and intentional\, actions we’ve taken to cultivate trust and reciprocity. Through this mutually developed methodology\, we have been exploring the risks and opportunities of agri-genomic technology and its potential impacts on Stó:lō foodways practices. The webinar will share what we’ve learned through this collaborative work\, with the understanding that there is no “one size fits all” approach to engaging with Indigenous communities. We hope by sharing our experiences and learnings\, we will enrich your thinking and inspire you to imagine new ways to enhance cross-cultural collaboration.

SUMMARY:Build a robust data ecosystem for One Health infectious disease research
DESCRIPTION:Tracking infectious diseases across humans\, animals\, and the environment—and understanding how they evolve—requires strong epidemiological intelligence (epi-intel). Integrating pathogen genomic data with high-quality contextual information provides high-resolution epi-intel and accelerates research. This approach was used widely during the COVID-19 pandemic\, yielding an unprecedented volume of data and a rapid expansion of knowledge. In this talk\, I’ll describe our methods for data harmonization and integration\, as well as the analytics and visualization tools we built. Through real-world case studies\, I’ll show how collaboration can create a more integrated\, effective data ecosystem for infectious-disease research. \nWhat you’ll learn in this session:  \n\nUnderstand what makes genomic epidemiology a powerful way to study infectious diseases\nAppreciate why sharing of infectious disease epidemiological data is challenging\nAppreciate how de-centralized but interoperable data ecosystem can address both FAIR and CARE Principles

SUMMARY:Don Rix Distinguished Keynote Address 2025: Space Genetics: Epigenetic Evolution in Cancer and a 500-Year Plan for Synthetic Biology
DESCRIPTION:The future of humankind on Earth is uncertain. Whether by climate disaster\, cataclysmic war\, or the death of the sun in a few billion years\, we face the prospect that at some time\, life on Earth may end.  As a resourceful species aware that life is at risk of extinction\, we have a responsibility to protect life—not only our own\, but for all species on Earth and for those still to come (by accidental or designed evolution\, or even AI). That means preparing to sustain life\, even one day beyond the boundaries of our planet and our solar system. The same capacity for ingenuity that has enabled us to build rockets and land on other planets can be applied to redesigning biology\, preparing ourselves to tolerate the extreme environments of outer space\, so that we can undertake long-term\, sustainable space travel. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Christopher Mason will share fascinating details on how the human body and the microbes within us react to spaceflight\, whether it’s for a short trip or a long journey. He will draw on findings from several NASA\, SpaceX\, and Axiom missions and provide key lessons for future missions to the Moon and Mars. Dr. Mason will highlight recent advances in biotechnology\, multi-omics\, data modelling\, and cross-species genome engineering\, which have revealed new ways extremophiles adapt to space and how human cells can be made more resistant to radiation. Ultimately\, Dr. Mason will explain how these discoveries and technologies could help us achieve an ambitious\, ethical goal: a 500-year plan to reengineer biology so that life can be possible on other planets. He will also reveal the best candidate planets for life in other solar systems.

SUMMARY:Genome BC's Data Literacy Series - Accelerating Europe's Response to Biodiversity Threats: The European Reference Genome Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Some scientists consider the biodiversity crisis to be a greater threat than climate change. Over 37\,000 species worldwide (28% of all species) are at risk of extinction. \nA reference genome is a digital nucleic acid sequence database assembled by scientists as a representative example of the set of genes in one idealized individual organism of a species. Reference genomes provide the most complete insight into the genetic basis that forms each species and represent a powerful resource in understanding how biodiversity functions. With approximately one-fifth of the ~200\,000 European species at risk of extinction\, European scientists decided to act fast and together to generate high-quality complete genome resources on a large scale. \nWhat you’ll learn in this session: \n\nWhat the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) is\nERGA’s impact on the scientific community and beyond\nExamples of recent genomes completed and how they will improve knowledge and applications\nFuture plans: scaling up genome production for the European biodiversity
