SUMMARY:Don Rix Distinguished Keynote Address 2019: "We are not alone: The Human Microbiome in Health and Disease"
DESCRIPTION:Inside and out\, our bodies host trillions of microscopic organisms comprised of bacteria\, archaea\, fungi\, and viruses. This is the human microbiota and your microbiome is all the genes your microbiota contains. We share a symbiotic relationship with these organisms and they play an important role in our health and disease. \nA pioneer and global leader in genomic medicine\, Dr. Claire M. Fraser is one of the most highly cited investigators in microbiology. In 1995\, Dr. Fraser was the first to map the complete genetic code of a free-living organism — Haemophilus influenza — the bacterium that causes lower respiratory tract infections and meningitis in infants and young children. She helped launch the new field of microbial genomics and revolutionized the way microbiology has been studied. She and her team also sequenced the bacteria behind syphilis and Lyme disease\, as well as the first plant genome and the first human-pathogenic parasite. Her work also helped identify the source of a deadly 2001 anthrax attack in one of the biggest investigations conducted by U.S. law enforcement. \nGenome BC was pleased to present Claire M. Fraser as the 2019 Don Rix Distinguished Keynote speaker. Join us as she discusses the structure and function of the human microbiome and the role it plays in health and disease. \nAn engaging Q&A session with the audience will follow the talk. This event is free of charge; however\, seating is limited and will reach capacity. Early registration is recommended. Genome BC is proud to organize science forums at no cost\, but we depend on your attendance. Please be sure you can attend before registering or contact us at info@genomebc.ca immediately should you need to cancel. \nFollow the Twitter conversation at #DRDK2019 \nThursday\, October 24th\, 2019\n4:00-4:30pm Registration\n4:30-6:00pm Keynote Address and Q&A\n6:00 – 7:00pm Reception \n

SUMMARY:Don Rix Distinguished Keynote Address 2018: Serving up Science: Plant Genomics and the Future of Food
DESCRIPTION:Genome BC was pleased to present Pamela Ronald as the 2018 Don Rix Distinguished Keynote speaker on. In her keynote: “Serving up Science: Plant Genomics and the Future of Food\,” plant geneticist Pamela Ronald explained how genomic approaches are being used to produce the next generation of crops. Genetic engineering of crops\, the marker-assisted breeding approaches of today and the genome editing of tomorrow are examples of a continuum of new technologies aimed at helping farmers produce food in a productive and ecologically-based manner. \nPamela Ronald’s Bio:  \nPamela Ronald is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and the Genome Center at the University of California\, Davis. She serves as founding Director of the Institute for Food and Agricultural Literacy at UC Davis. She is a visiting Professor in Stanford’s Center for Food Security and the Environment. \nPamela Ronald studies rice genes that control resistance to disease and tolerance to environmental stress. Ronald and colleagues received the 2008 USDA National Research Initiative Discovery Award and the 2012 Tech Award for innovative use of technology to benefit humanity. In 2014 she was named one of the world’s most influential scientific minds by Thomson Reuters\, in 2015 was selected by Scientific American as one of the world’s 100 most influential people in biotechnology and in 2016 was named one of the 50 innovators and visionaries who will lead us toward a more sustainable future by Grist magazine. She is co-author of Tomorrow’s Table: Organic Farming\, Genetics\, and the Future of Food. Her 2015 TED talk has been viewed by more than 1.5 million people and translated into 24 languages. \n
