SUMMARY:Genome BC's Data Literacy Series - Accelerating Europe's Response to Biodiversity Threats: The European Reference Genome Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Some scientists consider the biodiversity crisis to be a greater threat than climate change. Over 37\,000 species worldwide (28% of all species) are at risk of extinction. \nA reference genome is a digital nucleic acid sequence database assembled by scientists as a representative example of the set of genes in one idealized individual organism of a species. Reference genomes provide the most complete insight into the genetic basis that forms each species and represent a powerful resource in understanding how biodiversity functions. With approximately one-fifth of the ~200\,000 European species at risk of extinction\, European scientists decided to act fast and together to generate high-quality complete genome resources on a large scale. \nWhat you’ll learn in this session: \n\nWhat the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) is\nERGA’s impact on the scientific community and beyond\nExamples of recent genomes completed and how they will improve knowledge and applications\nFuture plans: scaling up genome production for the European biodiversity

Unlocking their potential is an interdisciplinary and translational challenge which requires the engagement of multiple stakeholders including funders\, data providers\, innovators\, researchers and end users. \nWhat you’ll learn in this session: \n\nWhat the First Nations Principles of ownership\, control\, access\, and possession (OCAP®) are\nKey concepts of Indigenous data sovereignty\, data governance and data management\nHow OCAP supports strong information governance on the path to First Nations data sovereignty\nHow to think about personal rights vs. collective rights when considering Indigenous Peoples and population data\nWhat the term “distinctions-based relationships” means in a research environment
