What tools do Medical Geneticists use to diagnose rare genetic diseases? How do different patterns of inheritance affect the probability that disease will appear in future generations?
In this activity, students take on the role of Medical Geneticists. Working in groups to analyze information, students use logical arguments to diagnose a patient with a mystery rare genetic disease. Students learn how to use pedigree charts to track physical characteristics across generations and Punnett squares to calculate the probability that disease will appear in future generations.
The Mini Medical Genetics Case Study takes a problem-based approach to teach students how to apply textbook topics to a real-world scenario.
