Meet Geneskool Volunteer Tina Chen
What are you studying at university?
Biochemistry
When did you first become interested in science?
I first became interested in science when I was in Grade 10. I found cells and organs in the body fascinating and wanted to learn more. Therefore, I went into the biology and chemistry branch for the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. I found the optional section of biochemistry in my chemistry class particularly interesting, so I decided to major in it in university.
What motivates you to volunteer?
I wanted to volunteer not only to help the students learn more about science, but also to meet new, like-minded people. Science a fascinating field but not many people have the chance to come into contact with it in their daily lives.
What was the most fun/inspiring/exciting moment so far as a Geneskool Volunteer?
The most exciting moment was when my students got awarded and recognized for their active contributions. I was very proud.
What advice would you give to a young aspiring scientist?
If you want to pursue this path, read more scientific books, watch more scientific videos and volunteer in professor’s labs. Don’t be afraid to try new things.
