Australian and US researchers have developed a new statistical approach that is helping reveal many previously hard-to-find oncogenes: genes that contribute to cancer. This new approach, the Oncomix method, allows researchers to get a closer look at the genetic information of cancer patients. Using this method the researchers were able to identify five genes that were over-active in one particular group of breast cancer patients, and focus in on one particular gene, known as CBX2. If further studies prove CBX2 is indeed an oncogene it could allow for the use of targeted therapeutic drugs in aggressive types of breast cancer.
