Traditionally researchers have looked for sources of new antibiotics in soil, but researchers have now found that the microbes on insects are often more effective in stopping infections. The research has already turned up a promising new antibiotic, named cyphomycin, which is able to stop the growth of bacteria and fungi, including fungi known to be resistant to more antibiotics. More work is needed before cyphomycin will be an available drug, but its discovery is proof that new antibiotics may be found in insect microbes.
