 Part Time Assistant Finance Officer

Reporting to the Finance Officer, the Assistant Finance Officer is responsible for a wide range of accounting duties relating to the analysis, preparation and maintenance of financial records of, and the generation of financial reports relating to, Genome British Columbia’s (Genome BC) portfolio of funded research projects. Genome BC’s research portfolio includes projects in sectors of economic importance to British Columbia – Agrifood, Forestry, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mining, Energy, Environment and Health.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the financial monitoring of Genome BC’s research projects
  • Reviews quarterly and annual project financial reports
  • Prepares and posts adjusting and recurring journal entries and updates general ledger accounts for quarterly project transactions
  • Analyzes and reconciles accounts to the general ledger as required
  • Prepares quarterly and annual accruals and adjustments
  • Prepares quarterly and annual research project financial reconciliations and reports
  • Prepares financial analyses relating to the research project portfolio as required
  • Keeps accurate records for all project files
  • Updates internal systems with financial data
  • Prepares reports for annual financial statement audits
  • Reviews and implements financial policies
  • Conducts project audits on Genome BC’s small scale funded projects

Education and Experience

  • A minimum of five years work experience in the financial management of projects in a role as Finance Officer/Assistant Finance Officer or equivalent
  • Familiar with audits, management of multi-year projects and accounting systems
  • Solid knowledge of financial and accounting procedures
  • Demonstrated interest in managing accounting activities
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment with frequent deadlines
  • Demonstrated strong work ethic and time management skills
  • Experience using financial software
  • Advanced MS Excel skills
  • University degree in Commerce/Business Administration or equivalent with a focus on finance and/or accounting
  • Professional designation such as a CPA is considered desirable
  • Experience with Infor Financial Management Software is desirable
