Researchers from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, in collaboration with Pacific Biosciences have for the first time, been able to read the whole genetic code from one single mosquito. This is a huge scientific leap, as previously DNA from numerous mosquitos had to be pooled together in order to gather enough DNA to build a genome. Thanks to this breakthrough, not only will it be able to decode the genomes of other small species, but it will potentially allow scientists to assemble the whole genetic code of a human patient’s cancer from a single biopsy.
