British Columbia 's projects and platforms require the most up-to-date technology to be internationally competitive, and in some cases require new tools and devices that are not available from commercial vendors, often because they represent very specific applications with a limited market.
In response to this need the Technology Development
Platform was established, with major financial
support from Genome Canada, to allow the mutual
sharing of equipment, expertise, and engineering
resources. Though the primary mandate of this
platform is to provide engineering support
and technology development for all Genome
BC projects and platforms, part of its activities
are also dedicated to project collaborations
with non-Genome BC researchers.
The core of the platform is located at the University of British Columbia in conjunction with Dr. Marziali's Applied Biophysics Laboratory, and satellite engineering groups are now being established at the user sites. The first of these groups to become operational is the Engineering Group at the BC Cancer Agency’s Genome Sciences Center, consisting of Robin Coope and Kurtis Guggenheimer. Additional groups are being established to support the primary technology development user sites, while the platform core will continue to act as a central resource for the satellite engineering groups, and the primary contact for external engineering project requests. |
