Proteomics is the large-scale study of the structure and function of the proteins in a cell, including the way they interact with each other. Although similar to genomics, proteomics can be more complex in scale because proteins change in response to the environment. Furthermore, measurements of protein expression and interactions under varying conditions can provide clues to understand protein and cellular functions.

The University of Victoria - Genome British Columbia Proteomics Centre was established, with major funding from Genome Canada, to provide the state-of-the-art technology in proteomics research for the Genome BC large-scale projects. The facility is located at the Vancouver Island Technology Park and houses mass spectrometry, bioinformatics support, together with standard protein analytical services such as protein microsequencing and solid phase peptide synthesis.
