Funds have been allocated through national competitions where scientists submit complete proposals describing their anticipated research projects. Proposals include details of the science/technology and experimental methodology, social and economic benefits, ethical considerations, a management and operational plan, detailed budget requirements, and a training program.
Proposals are then evaluated by leading international experts, to determine quality and pertinence of the research, competence of the management and operational plan, and appropriateness of the budget. Projects awarded through the Genome Canada peer review process are chosen on the strength of the scientific research plus the importance of the work to Canadians.
Genome BC is responsible for assisting project teams in preparing proposals suitable for large-scale research as well as administering funds and overseeing the projects to ensure they meet their milestones on time and within budget.
