Forestry

Forest products are one of BC’s most important export commodities but the industry is facing significant challenges including: forest pests such as the Mountain Pine Beetle; global economic conditions which affect demand; and the worldwide need to use sustainable management practices.

Genomics is developing technologies to mitigate the effects of impending climate change and to ensure sustainable harvesting of important tree species. Genome BC has invested in research projects that aim to create biodiversity in BC forests; investigate how trees adapt to a changing environment which could assist in adapting the forest to climate change; develop better methods for forecasting timber losses from pest infestation such as the Mountain Pine Beetle and Spruce Beetle; and defining the genetics of wood fibre properties to identify trees species with the best growth and fibre qualities for reforestation.
