Genome BC to Participate in the Third ERA-MarineBiotech (ERA-MBT) Transnational Call on “Marine Metagenomics”

Despite a wealth of potential, the bioactive materials from the world's marine organisms and ecosystems remain largely unexplored.  The third ERA-MBT call for applications “Metagenomic approaches for valorization from the marine environment” seeks to stimulate international collaborations combining research strengths in marine biology and metagenomics to make use of and develop new approaches and tools (integrated, functional- and/or sequenced-based metagenomics) to explore the marine microbiomes in the marine environment with a view to identifying new enzymes, metabolites, and metabolic pathways with biotechnological potential. With over 25,000km of coastline, and a thriving marine biology community and world-class genomics capacity, BC is ideally placed to participate in the ERA-MBT Program.

Funded under the FP7 ERA-NET scheme, ERA-MarineBiotech (ERA-MBT) is a consortium of national funding bodies seeking complementarities between national activities to pool resources to undertake joint funding of transnational projects in the area of Marine Biotechnology.

The ERA-NET scheme was launched by the European Commission to support the coordination and collaboration of national research programs. Since 2004, the ERA NET scheme has implemented more than 350 calls resulting in more than 3400 projects (€2.3billion in public funding research).

Application Process

The ERA-MBT Secretariat is responsible for all aspects of the management and administration of the program. Full details are available in the ERA-MBT Call Text and Guidelines for Applicants documents on the ERA-MBT call webpage.

As a partner in the call, Genome BC has set aside $600,000 CDN (~€400,000) over three years, sufficient to fund BC participation in up to two transnational projects.  BC researchers should consult the Genome BC-specific guidelines for the call for more information.

Submission of full proposals will be invited from 13 December 2016 and will be accepted until the call closes on 7 March 2017.  Projects are expected to start in late 2017.

Interested parties are encouraged to contact Rachael Ritchie at Genome BC (ERA@genomebc.ca).
