Genome BC Launches New Funding Program for Applied Genomics Research

VANCOUVER, BC – Genome BC is pleased to announce the new “Applied Genomics Innovation Program” (AGIP). The AGIP is a $40M program with an initial investment of up to $20M from Genome BC. It is designed to support applied genome sciences-derived innovations for specifically targeted sectors of BC's economy. The AGIP is focused on achieving practical applications within three to five years and is expected to support both small and large scale research projects.

Genome sciences hold great potential to address many of the critical challenges facing British Columbians today, from the health of our environment to the health of our citizens to the health of our economy.

Genome BC is therefore focused on the application of genomic sciences for the future of British Columbia. For example, capabilities created by the six successful health projects funded in 2004/05 (with approved budgets of $44.1 million) under the Applied Genomics and Proteomics Research in Human Health Competition are already contributing to the development of new approaches to solving a variety of human health problems.

Over the next year, Genome BC will introduce other new “Applied Genomics” initiatives of strategic importance to the Province to expand our existing capabilities in translating discovery science to everyday life.
