Dr. Stewart Johnson

Genome BC Project Leader

Dr. Stewart Johnson currently holds three distinguished positions: Head of Aquatic Animal Health at the Pacific Biological Station, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Adjunct Professor at the Ocean Sciences Centre Memorial University of Newfoundland and Adjunct Professor in the Biology Department at Dalhousie University. His career as a student was just as diverse with a PhD from Simon Fraser University, a Master of Science from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Victoria. Additionally, he was been a Visiting Scholar at Stanford at the Hopkins Marine Station and had a brief position in the Republic of Indonesia in the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Dr. Johnson’s research involves mainly assessing the health of marine ecosystems with a particular focus on how environmental factors affect the physiology, growth performance and disease resistance of aquatic animals. For example as part of the Genome Canada funded Atlantic Cod Genomics and Broodstock Development Project (www.codgene.ca) he is currently developing and implementing genomic tools to study how Atlantic cod respond to changes in their environment and exposure to disease.
