Dr. Ben Koop is Professor in biology at the University of Victoria and is a past Director of the University of Victoria’s Centre for Biomedical Research. He obtained a PhD from the University of Wayne State Medical School in 1988 and a Masters degree in Zoology from Texas Tech University in 1982.
Dr. Koop’s research interests lie in the fields of molecular biology, genetics and evolution. His research looks at broad molecular evolutionary problems using a very highly multidisciplinary approach. Most of his research focuses on developing genomic tools to aid the monitoring of marine ecology and aquaculture industry in British Columbia.
In 2001, Dr. Koop received the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Steacie Fellowship, one of Canada's premier science and engineering prizes; and is currently a Canada Research Chair.
