Dr. Ghallaugher is a fish physiologist and Director of Continuing Studies in Science, Director of the Centre for Coastal Studies, and Adjunct Professor of Biosciences, at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada.  In these roles she develops and directs multisectoral outreach programs addressing the science underlying natural resource policy and management. A major theme of these programs is marine resources.

The Speaking for the Salmon workshop/dialogue series, including: Getting the Missing Fish Story Straight (2005/2006) and The World Summit on Salmon (2003) has addressed issues related to the science, policy and management of wild salmon in a timely fashion over the past 10 years. Other programs have focused more broadly on ocean and marine ecosystems, such as  Changing Currents: Charting a Course of Action for the Future of Oceans (2005) and the community-based follow up meeting, The Future of Endangered Coastal Communities: Building Capacity for Renewal  (2006). Co-editor of a volume on marine conservation, Waters in Peril (Kluwer Academic Press) and co-author of book chapter, Tying it Together Along the BC Coast in Fishing Places, Fishing People (University of Toronto Press), Patricia was a member of the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines Scientific Panel on Offshore Oil and Gas Development (2002). In 2002 she was also the recipient of the Vancouver Aquarium Murray Newman Award for Excellence in Aquatic and Marine Conservation Research (2002) for selective fishing research conducted in partnership with members of the British Columbia commercial salmon fishing fleet, costal communities and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
