Using the animation in the classroom

  • Students can follow the interactive case study independently. This could be carried out as a library, or homework activity.
  • You could follow the case study as a class and then have students ask questions and comment on what they have seen. Here are some questions for discussion:
    • What is the role of genetic counselling?
    • How does Down syndrome occur?  (Here, you can discuss translocation and review meiosis, as needed.)
    • Describe the screening test outlined in the case study.  What are the pros and cons of this blood test?
    • Describe the diagnostic test outlined in the case study.  What are the pros and cons of the amniocentesis?
  • The case study could also be used as a preview for a larger project.
    • For example, students may do a research project on Down syndrome or another genetic disorder.
