Edible DNA
Curriculum Connection > Science 9
- Explain the process of cell division
What is this activity about?
In this hands-on activity, students will make an edible model of DNA out of candy while they review the genetic code. While making their models, students will have the opportunity to review the physical structure of DNA and base pairing.
How to use the activity in the classroom
- This activity should be used after cells and DNA have been discussed. Students need background knowledge on the physical structure of DNA and how the bases in DNA pair up.
- You could also use the activity as a form of assessment on base pairing. You can have students make their own models and show them to you for assessment. By checking students’ marshmallow base pairs, you can determine whether they understand base pairing.
Tips and Tricks
For a healthier alternative, you can use fruit instead of candy as the four bases. Please see the brochure instructions for details.
