Classroom Activities

We offer the following free presentations to classes:

  1. DNA extraction, 30-40 min.  Students get to mash a kiwi and use various reagents to extract DNA from the disrupted cells.  Activity includes an introduction about DNA.
PLOs: cells, scientific method, genetic code, DNA structure.
  2. Alien Babies, 30-40 min. A hands-on activity designed to explain inheritance from parent to child.
PLOs: DNA replication, interpret data, genetic code, inheritance, sexual reproduction.
  3. Lost in Translation: Create an insect, 40 min. A hands-on activity that relates the genetic code to protein assembly. It will also help students distinguish among positive, negative and neutral effects of mutations.
PLOs: DNA replication, protein synthesis, mutations, interpret data, genetic code-assembly of proteins.
  4. Mini CSI Mystery, approx. 1 hour.  Students do a DNA extraction, analyze fingerprints and DNA gel electrophoresis results to solve a mystery.
PLOs: DNA structure & function, cells, scientific method, data interpretation, problem solving.
  5. DNA code bracelets, 30 min.  This introduces the concept of the DNA code.  Students use the DNA codon table and coloured beads to make a bracelet of their name.
PLOs: genetic code, gene to protein relationship, DNA structure & function.
  6. Edible DNA, 25 min.  Students make an edible model of DNA.  This is a basic activity to introduce the concept of DNA and that its physical structure.
PLOs: genetic code, DNA structure & function.
