Geneskool Outreach Programs
GENOME BC GENESKOOL
At Genome BC, we strive to enable students to have fun while learning about genomics. We also believe in supporting secondary teachers and giving them the tools they need to teach students about this complex topic in new and interesting formats. Our Genome BC Geneskool is comprised of a series of outreach programs geared toward grades 9-12 that do just this! We welcome secondary teachers to learn more about our free, science education programs.
We work with teachers and students in the Lower Mainland, rural communities across BC and the Yukon. We send practicing scientists into their classrooms to provide hands-on science presentations and activities.
Partnering with post-secondary institutions, we offer full-day workshops for students in campus laboratories. Students solve a murder mystery “CSI style” while becoming familiar with working in a real laboratory and utilizing equipment they may not otherwise be able to access.
These four portable displays are full of hands on activities, articles, books, DVDs, pictures, etc. on various life science and genomics topics that are relevant to BC.
Designed for students that have completed Science 9 or higher, participants are given a unique opportunity to become immersed in genetics and genomics using state of the art equipment in university biology labs. Campers perform the clinical practices and molecular biology techniques that geneticists and scientists use every day; while exploring aspects of biotechnology, genetics, genomics, pedigree construction, inheritance and ethics in genetics.
