Geneskool Camp

Summer Camp 2014

Team Up with Genome BC to save the world - through SCIENCE!

Geneskool Summer Camps offer a unique opportunity for high school students to learn the molecular biology techniques that scientists use every day. Students will explore aspects of biotechnology, pathology, forensics, genetics, genomics and microbiology and use their new knowledge to investigate a series of fascinating and troubling disease outbreaks.

The Low Down:

  • Open to students who have completed Science 9 or higher
  • Each camp is a week-long day camp
  • Campers explore the exciting world of genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology, pathology and forensics while investigating a cluster of strange and puzzling disease cases!
  • Guest speakers talk about their jobs and the fascinating career opportunities out there involving science
  • Camps are hosted at university labs giving campers a rare opportunity to conduct real experiments using state-of-the-art equipment

Other Benefits:

  • Tour of the hosting university campus
  • Make new friends that have similar interests and aspirations
  • Do cool stuff like grow bacteria, amplify DNA, identify biological substances and solve a mystery
  • Have Fun!!!

Guest Speakers:

  • Jennifer Gardy, Senior Scientist (Genomics & Molecular Epidemiology), BCCDC Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Services. An engaging and lively speaker - you may have seen her on The Nature of Things! - Dr. Gardy will be speaking to campers about whole genome sequencing and the relationship between basic science and public health.
  • Other speakers To Be Confirmed

Camp Dates:

Capilano University, North Vancouver Campus - August 18th to 22nd, 2014 (FULL)

Camp Fees:

  • $275.00 program fee
